Sasivekalu Ganesha
About
Sasivekalu Ganesha is a fascinating statue in Hampi, carved from a single large rock. The statue, about 8 feet tall, shows Lord Ganesha seated in a relaxed position with one leg folded and another resting on the ground. The name “Sasivekalu” means mustard seed in the local language, referring to the unique shape of the idol's belly, resembling a mustard seed. Local legends connect the statue to a story where Ganesha ate so much food that his stomach burst and was tied back with a snake, which is visible in the carving. The statue rests in an open pavilion supported by stone pillars, offering shelter and a sense of grandeur. Surrounding the area are rocks and hills that add a natural charm. The open space lets visitors enjoy a peaceful atmosphere with views of the countryside. Positioned near the Hemakuta Hill, it is easily accessible and often visited for its artistic beauty and historical value. The statue's simplicity and intricate carving showcase the skill of the artisans from the Vijayanagara period. Visitors often admire its detailing, like the ornaments and expressions, which reflect devotion and craftsmanship. It is a perfect spot for those who love history, art, and quiet moments.
